Job Requirements
Age
Minimum: 21 years
Maximum: Under 35 years at the time of appointment, except for certain exceptions:
Previous employment as a sworn officer in a recognized department.
Auxiliary police service for 5+ years (under age 40).
Service as a deputy or Illinois State Police officer.
Veterans may exceed the age limit by years served on active duty, up to 10 years.
Education
High school diploma or GED equivalent.
Minimum 60 college credit hours OR one year of active military service (with honorable discharge).
Other Requirements
Valid driver's license.
20/20 corrected vision.
Proficiency in English (reading, writing, and speaking).
No felony convictions. Misdemeanor or serious traffic offenses may disqualify.
Possession of a valid POWER Test card (issued within one year of application deadline).
Hiring Process
Written exam.
Oral interview.
Polygraph examination.
Background investigation.
Conditional Offer: Medical, drug screening, psychological evaluation, and Academy Power Test.
Work Schedule
Patrol Division Schedule:
12-hour shifts on a 14-day rotation:
2 days on, 2 off; 3 days on, 2 off; 2 days on, 3 off.
Every other three-day weekend off.
Shifts start at 5:45 AM or PM.
Pay Period: 84 hours biweekly.
Probation: 18 months, including rotation every three months after academy graduation.
Specialized units or divisions may follow different schedules (e.g., 8.4 or 10.5-hour shifts).
Equipment
All uniforms, body armor, duty weapons, and equipment provided by the department.
Replacement provided as needed, with employees expected to maintain care for issued items.
