Job Description

The  University of Maine at Presque Isle is seeking to hire a full-time  Instructional Designer .  

In collaboration with the Center for Teaching & Learning Instructional Design team, faculty, and other campus and System stakeholders, this position supports excellence in teaching and accessible learning pathways for faculty and students at the University of Maine at Presque Isle. The incumbent will consult with faculty, instructional design staff and administration and advise on best design practices and accessibility for excellent student learning pathways. The successful candidate is also responsible for co-developing and delivering technical training and tutorials to distant faculty and students using supported media tools for teaching, as well as explaining how these tools work best in the Learning Management System (LMS). Work results have a direct and highly visible impact on the quality of instruction and on the student experience across teaching all modalities.

This position is primarily in-person, and in-state, but a hybrid position may be considered for a candidate with the right combination of education and experience. Travel to Presque Isle and/ or other campus locations may be required.  

The salary for this position is full time, on-campus position $43,951. The university will take into consideration the salary of current UMS employees for transfer/promotion depending on skills and experience. Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree with coursework in education and/or educational technology
  • At least two years of recent experience working with various types of computer software, including Microsoft Office and Google Workspace applications
  • Recent experience designing in a Learning Management System (LMS)
  • Experience teaching and/or tutoring adult learners
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure and manage time effectively
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a project team
  • Ability to rapidly learn new software applications and platforms

Recommended Knowledge, Skills and Experience: 

  • Knowledge of current in-person, hybrid, and digital pedagogy, with a basic understanding of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles 
  • Experience working with non-technical subject-matter experts (SMEs) in live, hybrid, and remote environments in a positive and solution-oriented manner 
  • Ability to translate various types of content into accessible multimedia formats (e.g., video, audio, graphics, HTML) 
  • Active listening skills and the ability to adapt communication for diverse audiences 

Preferred Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

  • Master’s degree in Instructional Design, Technology, Education, or related field. 
  • Previous teaching experience in higher education
  • Knowledge and understanding of the principles of andragogy, adult learning, and/or competency-based education (CBE) delivery
  • Experience with administering an LMS.
  • Experience with the following platforms: Brightspace, Zoom web-conferencing, Kaltura, Adobe Creative Suite, and WordPress.
