Job Description

Position Summary:

The Diesel Mechanic Helper / Apprentice assists experienced mechanics with inspection, maintenance, and repair of diesel-powered trucks, trailers, and equipment. This is an entry-level position intended to build knowledge, skill, and experience toward becoming a fully qualified Class A Diesel Mechanic.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in diagnostics, repairs, and routine maintenance on diesel engines, transmissions, brakes, suspensions, and electrical systems.

  • Retrieve tools and parts, and prepare work areas under the direction of a certified mechanic.

  • Perform basic services such as oil changes, tire rotations, fluid checks, filter replacements, and greasing.

  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the shop and tools.

  • Learn and follow safety procedures and shop best practices.

  • Record service and maintenance activities on logs or digital platforms.

  • Support mobile service or field repairs when needed.

  • Report unusual conditions or safety issues to the supervisor or lead mechanic.

  • Participate in on-the-job training and formal learning opportunities.

 

Qualifications:

Required:

  • High school diploma or GED

  • Basic mechanical knowledge and interest in diesel engines

  • Valid driver's license

  • Ability to lift 50 lbs and work in physically demanding environments

  • Willingness to follow directions and learn from experienced technicians

  • Good communication skills and a teamwork attitude

Preferred:

  • CDL Class A license or interest in obtaining one

  • Enrollment in or completion of a diesel technology program

  • Basic tools (preferred but not required)

 

Work Environment:

  • Industrial shop setting and outdoor work areas

  • Exposure to noise, grease, fumes, and moving mechanical parts

  • May require weekend or evening hours based on shop needs

 

Growth Path:

Successful candidates may advance to:

  • Diesel Technician / Mechanic Level I

  • Certified Class A Diesel Mechanic
